North Dakota vs Nebraska Live score: Scott Frost’s Cornhuskers blow double-digit lead, Wildcats prevail in Ireland
With the loss, Nebraska falls to 5-21 in one-score games under fifth-year coach Scott Frost

WATCH 2022 COLLEGE FOOTBALL LIVE

For the second straight season, Nebraska dropped a season-opening game against a Big Ten opponent in excruciating fashion, blowing not one, but two double-digit leads in a 31-28 loss to Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland. Routinely on the wrong end of close games, the Cornhuskers now fall to 5-21 in one-score affairs under fifth-year coach Scott Frost.

Nebraska showed real promise early in the third quarter, but everything changed once Frost called a bizarre onside kick after going up 28-17. Northwestern quickly sniffed out the kick and converted with a 44-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard Cam Porter touchdown to cut the lead to four.

Then, Texas transfer quarterback Casey Thompson threw his first interception in a Cornhuskers uniform. Northwestern responded with a six-play, 42-yard scoring drive culminating in a four-yard run from running back Evan Hull to give the Wildcats the lead for good. Northwestern ran the ball 12 straight times to kill the clock in the fourth quarter, using a four-minute drive to take the clock to just outside the two-minute mark. Thompson then threw another back-breaking interception off the fingers of a receiver on the next possession to end the game.

Much was asked of Thompson in his first start; the transfer threw 41 times for 355 yards with two total touchdowns. However, one pass was placed slightly high and another was tipped by a receiver for two frustrating interceptions. Running back Anthony Grant posted 101 yards rushing and two touchdowns, but the Cornhuskers averaged just 2.2 yards per carry outside of a 46-yard touchdown run.

Northwestern quarterback Ryan Hilinski played one of the best games of his lengthy carer, however, completing 27 of 38 passes for two touchdowns with no interceptions. Hull and Porter also combined for 213 yards rushing and two scores.

What did we learn from Saturday’s Week 0 game in Dublin? Here are three takeaways from the Big Ten opener to the 2022 season.

The new era looks like the old era

After a disappointing 3-9 campaign last season, Frost brought in a new quarterback (Thompson), new offensive coordinator (Mark Whipple) and a number of new players and assistants. In so many ways, this was billed as a new program that earned a fresh start under an embattled head coach.

The second Northwestern applied any pressure, however, the Huskers reverted right back to the mistakes of old.

“I think we’re gonna learn as an offensive staff that you have to be a little creative in this league,” said Frost. “It’s tough for me, there’s no one way of doing things. I think we can cooperate a little bit more.”

Despite the heralded workouts from new offensive line coach Donovan Raiola, Nebraska was a complete non-factor in the trenches. When things started getting uncomfortable, Thompson’s receivers regressed quickly. Not helping matters was the fact that tight end Travis Vokolek left with an injury. The final drive of the game ended with a receiver drop followed by a pass bouncing off a receiver’s fingers for an interception. Naturally, turnovers ended up being a deciding factor.

Frost has had unbelievably bad luck in close games over his tenure. At a certain point, there’s simply no excuse left.

It’s an even-numbered year

The Wildcats have famously put together their best campaigns in even-numbered years over the past few seasons, including a Big Ten West title in 2020 and No. 21 finish in the AP Top 25 in 2018. After a miserable 3-9 effort last season, Northwestern looked more impressive in almost every facet than anyone could have expected.

The offensive line was the most impressive unit on the field by far, clearing the way for a group that posted 528 total yards on 6.4 yards per play. More impressively, the Cornhuskers had zero sacks and only one credited quarterback pressure.

Granted, it’s hard to know exactly how much to read into things with an inconsistent Nebraska squad on the other sideline, but Northwestern won the game on its own terms. While there’s still plenty to prove before the middle of the Big Ten schedule, the Wildcats have some legitimately elite talent groups with upside against even the best in the Big Ten West.

Bowl eligibility just became harder

Nebraska has not been to a bowl game since 2016, and Frost needs to reach that feat in 2022, at least, in order to keep his job. Unfortunately, losing a season-opener in which the Cornhuskers were favored for the second year in a row makes the pathway even harder.

Nebraska returns home for a matchup against a tricky FCS squad in North Dakota and will play Clay Helton’s Georgia Southern squad the following week. Then, it’s a battle with No. 9 Oklahoma in Lincoln in a game that could make or break Frost’s career.

There are winnable games on the horizon — but are any as winnable as against Northwestern? Without any bye weeks before Sept. 24, there’s not much chance to settle down. And don’t count on Frost leaving on his own if the results don’t come in 2022.

“No,” said Frost when asked if he would resign following the loss, “I love the guys.”

Arizona vs San Diego State Game Preview
Why Arizona Will Win

This is a much, much better Arizona team than the one that struggled so much through last season.

The transfer portal had a whole lot to do with it, going through the growing pains last year played a big role, and upgrading key spots should mean everything with Washington State QB Jayden de Laura and WR Jacob Cowing soon to be the new stars.

This isn’t a high-powered San Diego State team. It has to win on toughness, the running game, and defense. With eight starters back for the Wildcats – and with decent size up front to hold up – the D is about to rise up against the power teams. However …

Why San Diego State Will Win

This isn’t the defense you want to face if you’re trying to get the offense going.

The Wildcats have enough playmakers now at the skill spots to have a few nice moments, but can the generate a push against a defense that’s about to be among the best in the nation again?

The D lost a few key guys, but it made up for it with the addition of Justus Tavai from Hawaii to go along with his brother, Jonah. The line is about to be a brick wall again, the secondary can pop, and the offensive side has a quietly good receiving corps for Virginia Tech transfer QB Braxton Burmeister to work with.

But the real star of the show will be

WATCH: Chip Kelly Talks Starting Game Prep, UCLA’s Pass Rush

The Bruins brought in a lot of help up front via the transfer portal, with the Murphy twins, Laiatu Latu, Jacob Sykes and Gary Smith III all arriving this offseason.

WATCH 2022 COLLEGE FOOTBALL LIVE

UCLA football coach Chip Kelly spoke to reporters ahead of Friday morning’s practice session. Kelly talked about his first impressions of Bowling Green, the improved pass rush via the transfer portal, Garrett DiGiorgio’s performance in fall camp and how the defense may have improved as a whole.

Yankoff cross-training with running backs?

He’s cross-training, a real versatile kid, obviously coming off a foot injury, was a great special teams player for us during the COVID season, had played receiver, has the ability to do some things coming out of the backfield. We’re using him in a couple of different spots, but he’s still coming off the foot so he’s not 100% in terms of everything in practice, so it’s just segment parts for him, so we’ll see what that leads to.

Possible he could get carries?

Yeah, we don’t have game plan things like that, but he can play running back, he can play receiver, he can play tight end. The more versatile you are when you’re not a starter, the better off you are.

Orange jerseys?

Uh, we’re playing Bowling Green in a week. We start next Saturday, Sept. 3. We’re going to play a football game. It’s supposed to be at the Rose Bowl, from what I understand. It’s supposed to be 11:15, so. It’s introduction to the Bowling Green game plan, so today and tomorrow and then Sunday’s an off day for those guys and then we’ll really start our game week, but because of camp you really have two extra days to [inaudible], we’ll still do some ones versus ones work today, but we’ll spend at least one period just introducing Bowling Green’s offense and defense to our respective and the same thing with special teams.

Lowdown on Bowling Green?

Interesting team. They beat Minnesota early in the year last year and Minnesota, I think, was a nine-win team that won their bowl game, so played really, really well against them. Were up and down in the MAC during the season, finished off with a big win over Ohio, but they seem like they’re a pass-first offense, their quarterback is a really good, he can do some things and he can create and make plays on the run, they’ve got a bunch of tight ends, they’re going to be multi in formations. Defensively, they’re a 3-4 team that was really, really good—I think they led the conference in rush defense last year, they return nine starters on the defensive side of the ball, so a good, really well-coached team, I’ve known Scott for a while and I think he does a really good job with those guys. They play hard when you watch them on tape, so we’re very aware—especially when you watch what they did to Minnesota at Minnesota last year. They were really physical in that football game, so it’s a good football team.

Minnesota upset get your guys’ attention?

I think so. When you look at what Minnesota’s done and what P.J.’s done there, I think Minnesota was a nine-win team last year and won a bowl game, so I think that in its own right will tell you that every week you have to be prepared for whoever you’re playing, so I think that will catch your attention, so that’s one of the games we’ve used in our breakdowns on both sides of the ball.

Getting pressure from four-man rushes essential, get that our of the transfer portal?

Yeah, I think there are some impact kids that we hope with the Murphs and Latu kind of on the edges and then Jacob Sykes inside that’s really added another dimension for us also, so it’s critical. You just can’t be in zero coverage to create pressure on the quarterback. The coaching adage is, when you’re in zero coverage the band plays—is it our band or their band? So if they do a good job of picking up that pressure then the quarterback has got to decipher one-on-one coverage, so we feel like we’ve got to generate a pass rush with our front and be able to play coverage [?] behind us and so far what we’ve gotten out of those guys, I’ve been really, really impressed with them, so they’re excited to get an opportunity to go play somebody else and we’ll get a chance to see what they really look like next Saturday.

Ohio State vs. Notre Dame: preview and prediction

The beginning of the college football season always feels a bit like Christmas morning. There are expectations of what we might get, but we’re never quite sure until we get to that day and unwrap the packages. Will it be everything we hoped and dreamed for or will it be a feeling of a letdown?

WATCH 2022 COLLEGE FOOTBALL LIVE

To say expectations are high for this Ohio State team would be an understatement. After a massive retooling of the defensive, the pressure is on to compliment what could be an all-time historic offense. So far, all signs are pointing to a defensive unit that is playing with a chip on its shoulder. But as always, talk is cheap until we see live game action.

Notre Dame comes to Columbus for the first time since the mid-90s for a regular season contest. It doesn’t get much bigger than the Fighting Irish when it comes to marquee matchups. Both teams are in the top five and looking to prove they are serious title contenders. Time to kick off the 2022 Ohio State football season!

Ohio State Potential Game Plan for Victory

We all know that the Ohio State offense is going to score. It was one of the most prolific offenses in the history of college football last year. Yes, the Buckeyes did lose two first-round wide receivers in Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, tight-end Jeremy Ruckert, and a few key offensive linemen, but overall this side of the ball is loaded for bear.

The wealth of talent at the wide receiver position at OSU has been well documented. The danger may be to get enamored with throwing too much. Let’s not forget, TreVeyon Henderson is one of the best running backs in the country. However, the Notre Dame defensive line is its strength. Ryan Day may choose to throw the ball early and often to get the defense on heels before unleashing Henderson.

Let’s be honest though, no one is really worried about the Buckeye offense. The defense however is a huge question mark. Talent has never been lacking in Columbus, but the defense just hasn’t been the silver bullets of old. Enter Jim Knowles.

The new defensive coordinator for Ohio State seems confident that he can install a new system that will confuse opposing teams with multiple looks. Knowles’ former team, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, were a top-rated defensive team in 2021 and now Knowles has even greater talent to work with.

Look for the defensive line to be much improved with more pressure from the edges. I also expect Knowles to bring multiple looks with disguised packages to confuse Irish quarterback, Tyler Buchner. Buchner is a true duel-threat QB, so the Buckeyes will have to be sure to contain and be aware of his ability to run.

Two Key Players for Ohio State
C.J. Stroud – Quarterback

C.J. Stroud is the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman trophy for a reason. The offense begins and ends with Stroud at this point. It took him a few weeks last season to really look comfortable, but by year’s end, when the offensive line gave him time, he was nearly unstoppable. Ohio State’s national title hopes fall squarely on Stroud’s shoulders and he gets a chance to pick up right where he left off on January 1 in Pasadena.

And, in the 2020 Citrus Bowl, Reynolds played against the Crimson Tide as a member of the Michigan football team, but did not record any stats. USU graduate senior DT Phillip Paea was on that Michigan football team, as well, but did not play in the Citrus Bowl.

UTAH STATE vs. THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

The last time USU played a team from the SEC was on Oct. 5, 2019, when it lost at No. 5 LSU, 42-6.

BLAKE ANDERSON vs. THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
• Utah State’s Blake Anderson will be facing a team from the SEC for the sixth time as a collegiate head coach. As the head coach at Arkansas State, his teams played at Tennessee in 2014 (L, 19-34), hosted Missouri in 2015 (L, 20-27), played at Auburn in 2016 (L, 14-51), played at Alabama in 2018 (L, 7-57) and played at Georgia in 2019 (L, 0-55).

ROSTER BREAKDOWN
• Utah State has 34 players on its roster from the Beehive State, while Alabama has 44 players on its roster from the Yellowhammer State.

LAST MEETING vs. ALABAMA
• Freshman RB Ryan Bohm rushed for a career-high 94 yards, while sophomore QB Leon Jackson III passed for 147 yards, but the Alabama defense was too much for Utah State (2-5) as the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide (8-0) defeated USU 35-3 inside Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005. Alabama scored on each of its first two possessions and appeared to be on a roll. However the Aggie defense kept the Tide out of the end zone again until the 4:41 mark of the second quarter. Alabama took a 21-0 lead into halftime. USU responded by scoring on the first possession of the second half, marching 65 yards before junior PK Justin Hamblin kicked a 24-yard field goal. The points were the first of the season scored in the third quarter against Alabama. On the Aggies’ next possession, USU drove from its own 20-yard line to the Alabama 24. A Hamblin 41-yard field goal attempt was wide right. Alabama responded by scoring its fourth touchdown of the game to go up 28-3.
The Tide than added a fourth-quarter touchdown to complete the scoring. Bohm gained 94 yards on 17 carries, while Jackson hit 11 of 28 passes for 147 yards with one late interception. Defensively, freshman LB Jake Hutton posted a game-high-tying eight tackles. Sophomore S Antonio Taylor recorded seven stops, while senior S Andre Bala added six tackles. Senior DE John Chick recorded a sack to give him 6.5 on the year.

What to Know

The Wisconsin Badgers and the Illinois State Redbirds will round out the year against one another The Badgers are out to keep their three-game home win streak alive.

It was a close one, but two weeks ago Wisconsin sidestepped the Nicholls State Colonels for a 71-68 win. The overall outcome was to be expected, but Nicholls State made it more of a contest than the oddsmakers had predicted. Guard Brad Davison (19 points) was the top scorer for Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, the stars were brightly shining for Illinois State in an 81-64 victory over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners last Tuesday. It was another big night for Illinois State’s guard Antonio Reeves, who posted a double-double on 21 points and ten boards.

This next game looks promising for the Badgers, who are favored by a full 17 points. They have been consistent moneymakers against the spread when favored (6-3), so they might be worth a quick bet.

Their wins bumped Wisconsin to 9-2 and the Redbirds to 8-5. We’ll see which team can carry over their success and which team inevitably falls when Wisconsin and Illinois State clash.
